~ concepts ~

A recent incident illustrates the deep rootedness of the mind with concepts, blinding the individual from just seeing it as it is...

In India, Tulsi plant is considered as sacred and is usually placed in front of the entrance or the backyard entrance. It is generally worshiped in a traditional way with Kumkum and other ritualistic methods. So, it is nothing but natural for many traditionalist to look at it with a special eye than compared to many many other plants. Undoubtedly, the plant is well known for its exceptional herbal and medicinal qualities.

Generally, i prefer to manure the plants with naturally available sources from the kitchen such as vegetable peels, egg shells, etc. It so happened that the Tulsi plant too got its share of crushed egg shells along with the rest of the plants.

When someone had a look at the presence of egg shells in Tulsi plant, it was a shock. They couldnot accept that a tulsi plant can indeed be nurtured with egg shells, without harming anyone or even the plant. I do understand the sentimental value behind that person but indeed it is pitiable that such deep rooted concepts blind the individual to see the plant as just a plant but prefer to label it, lock it and expect others to value that opinion too.

Ignorance, in various forms such as these concepts emerge every now and then, only to blind the individual to realize and see the truth as it is. Indeed, one needs to be aware of this. Wisdom is all about to see it as it is....without any labels, any boundaries....

Hi Merging Point,

Indeed so many people are rooted to concepts. Partially because our educational program which focus on left-brain activities, another part because religious dogma.

Anyhow, it is better if we can talk to the plant. How you "give" them the egg shells affect their being--they are sensitive to our intention :)

Waiting for your next post :)

yes, it is vital to know the difference in giving. Just like when the food prepared or given to a child has that touch of love, it speaks in volumes...anything for that matter, when the action arises from the source, nothing more needed to express...

Such wisdom! It is the difference between religious dogma and spiritual truth when we can be flexible to the needs of the moment.
This story illustrates how we can lose the heart of religion when we are bound by concepts that served a particular time and space. It is how we put the teachings into practice in our lives that matter, always coming from the space of love and kindness.

Namaste!

Thankyou for your wise and insightful comment Miruh!

Moving from religious dogmas to Spiritual truth is indeed a big leap...grace is all that can facilitate such a smooth transformation.

Yes, what it comes to, is whether the plant is nourished with love....and the offerings to the plant may come from pure intent of heart, or perhaps people feed plants other intentions too where the plant then becomes a reflection of their own character traits.

It was fun visiting with you, my friend.

Tulsi is a princess who is an ardent devotee of Vishnu. She loved her Lord so much that chose to eternally wait at his doorstep for a glimpse of her Lord. Gave up riches, gave up her clan (was rejected by all) and wealth of a mansion and stood in eternity waiting. Her devotion lies in her waiting, not just at the doorstep of the Lord at every temple but in every devotee’s home where the Lord’s name is chanted.

She chose the birth of a plant whose leaves adorn the lord, to be with HIM in eternity. He loves her so much that the leaves are placed closest to his heart (metaphorically and spiritually). No offering is complete without the leaves of tulsi, simply because they eternalize the ultimate devotion. See any temple the tulsi leaves adorn the idol of Krishna TOUCH HIM ALWAYS, even his His consort is not so blessed. She stays by his side!! .Like the Master states in the the Gita "My devotee is my beloved and is mine as always.

Tulsi is also Sanjeevni one of the life giving plants and its where its qualities come…of course from the Lord.

This is the greatness of Tulsi, a Master in her own right is on the same staus as Hanuman. A small amount of water poured while chanting Vishnu’s name from within is all that is needed.

Your post did trigger this and though pained at first to see someone justifying offering egg-shells to a Master I am grateful to you eternally for you made me write this, for I thought of Her at least for sometime and pray a drop of her devotion graces my life.

At the gross level........
the calcium requirement for the Ocimum sanctum ( sacred basil) is minimal and not required to be added as it is present in the soil itself. The best organic manure is cowdung and that is complete is enough. Egg shells are not needed.

Dear Anonymous,

Thankyou for the religious descriptions which i was not aware.
The realized beings have time and again pointed at the truth with such wonderful indicators. But, human mind wishes to choose ONLY the surface and conveniently refuse to go deep and beyond.

"It is the difference between religious dogma and spiritual truth when we can be flexible to the needs of the moment."

Miruh's comment speaks it all...

You need a stick or a finger to point to something, but neither of them can become the pointed. That doesnt mean you devalue the pointer, but simply know it as a pointer.
